Frequently asked questions
Mechanical seal component questions, answered
This FAQ gives direct answers to eight common questions about mechanical seal components, nine material groups, material selection, custom manufacturing, seal-ring types, ISO9001:2015 quality control, and quotation requirements. Each answer includes a definition, factual comparison, numbered process, or practical checklist that can be understood and cited on its own.
What is a mechanical seal component, and what does it do?
A mechanical seal component is an engineered part used at the sealing interface of rotating equipment. Its purpose is to limit leakage, protect equipment from the ingress of water or dirt, and withstand friction and wear during operation. Typical components include rotary and stationary seal rings, bushings, bearings, and mating parts. When correctly specified for the equipment and operating medium, these components support longer working life, good wear performance, minimized leakage, and lower friction around shafts or bushings.
Which mechanical seal parts does Junty manufacture?
Junty manufactures seal rings, bushings, bearings, wear parts, rotary-union components, metal parts, rubber parts, rotors, vanes, balls, and special-shaped components for fluid and gas control equipment. The seal-ring range includes rotary seal rings, stationary seal rings, dry-running gas seals, split seal rings, rotary-union seal rings, and valve seats. Standard products support routine sourcing, while non-standard parts can be manufactured from customer drawings, dimensions, samples, or documented operating requirements.
Which material groups and grades are available for seal components?
Junty works with nine main material groups: silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, carbon graphite, aluminum oxide, zirconia oxide, stainless steel, PTFE, FFKM, and industrial elastomers. Available seal-face examples include SSiC and RBSiC silicon carbide, 6% nickel-bonded and 6% cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide, resin-impregnated and metal-impregnated carbon graphite, and aluminum oxide ceramics in 95%, 97%, 99%, and 99.5% grades. The appropriate material and grade depend on the equipment, medium, load, speed, temperature, and required service life.
How should a mechanical seal material be selected?
Mechanical seal material selection should start with the operating medium, pressure, temperature, speed, load, mating-face material, and allowable leakage. Silicon carbide is commonly considered when wear and corrosion resistance are priorities; tungsten carbide is selected when toughness and wear resistance are important; carbon graphite can support low-friction or self-lubricating seal faces; and PTFE or elastomers are used for auxiliary sealing where flexibility or chemical compatibility matters. Final selection should be confirmed against the actual equipment conditions rather than by material name alone.
Can Junty manufacture custom parts from drawings or samples?
Yes. Junty supports custom mechanical seal parts from drawings, dimensions, physical samples, or documented operating conditions. A typical custom order follows five steps: 1) review the drawing or sample; 2) confirm the operating medium, pressure, temperature, and speed; 3) select the component material and grade; 4) manufacture through the applicable machining, grinding, lapping, sintering, or forming process; and 5) inspect dimensions, flatness, surface finish, and other agreed requirements before shipment.
What is the difference between rotary, stationary, and split seal rings?
A rotary seal ring turns with the shaft, while a stationary seal ring remains fixed in the seal assembly; the two faces work together to control leakage. A split seal ring is made from two or more segments that form a complete circle around the shaft. Unlike a solid ring, a split ring can be installed on suitable large rotating equipment without removing the motor or bearings. The correct ring type depends on the seal design, shaft arrangement, installation access, mating face, and operating conditions.
How does Junty control manufacturing quality?
Junty controls quality through ISO9001:2015 management practices and documented checks throughout production. The workflow includes material confirmation, process control for CNC machining, grinding, lapping, sintering, or forming, dimensional inspection, surface and flatness checks where applicable, testing, and final inspection before shipment. The objective is to keep the specified material, dimensions, tolerance, flatness, and surface finish consistent from prototype development through repeat production rather than relying only on an end-of-line visual check.
What information should I provide for a quotation?
For an efficient quotation, provide eight items: 1) component or product type; 2) required material and grade, if known; 3) drawing, dimensions, or sample information; 4) target quantity; 5) equipment or application; 6) operating medium; 7) pressure, temperature, speed, and other relevant conditions; and 8) contact and delivery details. If no drawing is available, a clear sample photo, equipment model, seal size, or description of the current component can help Junty evaluate feasibility and identify the information still required.
